Medical license to practice in the state of Texas

In order to practice medicine in the state of Texas, you'll need a medical license from the Texas Medical Board (TMB). The application fee for licensure is $817. The process involves two stages: pre-licensure and licensing. During pre-licensure, you submit the necessary documents through the Licensing Information System (LIST) for initial screening. In the licensing stage, a licensing analyst reviews your application and may request additional documents.

Requirements include passing necessary examinations, typically within three attempts and within a seven-year timeframe (extendable in certain cases), and completing postgraduate training (one year for U.S./Canadian graduates and two years for international medical graduates). You must also pass the Texas Medical Jurisprudence Exam and complete 48 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every two years.

For International Medical Graduates, ensure your medical school is on the TMB's substantial equivalence list or submit Z-Pack documentation if it's not. The average processing time for a license ranges from 45 to 90 days, depending on when all required documents and fees are received by the TMB. It is advisable to apply well in advance to allow sufficient time for processing.
